Improving the Mailing Process for a Large Insurance Company

A Specified Solution for a Smoother Workflow

A large insurance company located in Ohio has partnered with GBS for many years. This insurance company operates two post processing facilities within the United States and, combined, these two facilities produce in excess of 100 million pieces of mail per year. This customer processed all statements and other white paper print on 20# roll stock provided by GBS. The company had no issues with the product as the quality was consistent and the product performed well in the printers. Being a long-time partner and having excellent knowledge of both the material and processes used in their mail operations centers, GBS approached the customer about testing an alternate to the roll stock that was being used in statement processing and other communications. GBS’ commitment to process improvement and reducing costs, along with their knowledge of the customer’s operations, was instrumental in driving this project. We worked closely with the customer, testing and implementing a change in roll stock to an 18# version that functions the same in the printers as the 20# stock.

Proven Results – Annual savings of over $326,700

The insurance company was pleased with the results. This alternate stock, referred to as Postal Advantage paper, allowed the customer to change some of the mail that had been sent out as a flat piece to now be converted to a 6” x 9.5” mail piece. This change led to an estimated annual savings of over $326,700 (based on processing 726,000 less flat envelopes at the minimum price difference of $.45) in postage plus increased speed and efficiency in the inserting process. Additional savings in freight also resulted due to more pages per roll, and increased “thru put” on the printers (less frequent roll changes).
